Gustav Klimt signature analysis

Signature

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) had a very distinct signature. He often wrote out his full first and last name. He would write in all capital letters, placing "Gustav" over "Klimt." He used a very stylized text that has been turned in to a typeface called Klimt.

Signature

Klimt also had a monogram that utilized his initial "G" and "K" surrounded by a square. Klimt's signature compliments his decorative, art nouveau style that has become synonymous with "fin-de-siècle" Vienna.

Signature

Many of Klimt's works carry a "Gustav Klimt Nachlass" stamp. "Nachlass" means "estate" and was added to certify authenticity.

Signature

Klimt signed many of his drawings one name over the other in block letters. Unsigned drawings are stampled with his estate stamp. " Gustav Klimt Nachlass,"

Signature

Signature is rarely sufficient for authenticating a painting, signatures must be checked, but results must be carefully placed in the correct context. A signature is only one element, and not a determining one, in the process of authentication.
